France Becomes First Country In The World To Make Abortion A Constitutional Right

France has become the first country in the world to establish abortion as a constitutional right officially. This historic decision was made by French lawmakers on Monday, with a decisive vote of 780-72 in favor of the bill.

President Emmanuel Macron hailed this milestone as a moment of “French pride” conveying a “universal message” supporting women’s reproductive freedom. The new amendment ensures that the law will define the conditions under which women can access abortion, guaranteeing their right to make choices about their bodies.

Although abortion has been legal in France since 1975, recent polls indicate that around 85% of the public supported enshrining this right in the constitution.

While other countries have included reproductive rights in their constitutional frameworks, France is the first to explicitly declare that abortion will be protected as a fundamental right.

The amendment marks the 25th change to France’s founding document and the first since 2008. Following the historic vote, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was illuminated in celebration, displaying “My Body My Choice.”

Before the vote, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal emphasised the importance of safeguarding the right to abortion, stating that women should have autonomy over their bodies without interference from others.
