A heartbreaking event in Warri, Delta State, has once again raised concerns about online dating safety in Nigeria after a young woman named Brenda tragically lost her life following a visit to a man she met on TikTok.

Brenda had reportedly been chatting with a TikTok user known as “Emmypounds” for just three days before she agreed to visit him at his apartment along Jakpa Road. Friends say that was the last time she was seen or heard from.

Worried when they couldn’t reach her, Brenda’s family and close friends began searching. One of her friends, who had access to her TikTok chats on another phone, discovered that she had gone to see Emmypounds. This revelation triggered a desperate search to locate her.

When finally reached, Emmypounds told the family that Brenda had fallen sick and was taken to a hospital. But when they found her, the situation was far worse than expected.

Brenda was unconscious, covered in bruises, and wearing adult diapers due to a loss of bowel and bladder control. She couldn’t speak and remained in critical condition until she sadly passed away, without ever revealing what had happened.

The police later arrested Emmypounds for questioning. During his statement, he denied hurting Brenda, saying they had shared the same room and that he woke up to find her unwell.

Delta State Police spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, addressed the media, explaining that the case is not being handled as a murder at this time.

He said early investigations suggest Brenda may have died from inhaling generator fumes while at the apartment. He also confirmed that Emmypounds showed signs of fume exposure and received medical care before being taken into custody for further questioning.

Brenda has now been buried, and the police are continuing their investigations to fully understand what led to her untimely death.
