South African singer Tyla has nabbed another music award by taking home the Best Afrobeats at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards.
MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) celebrated its 30th anniversary on Sunday, 10 November, presenting the best artists and firsts and showcasing the best of global music variety. Last night, the show was held at the Co-op Arena.
The MTV EMAs’ Best Afrobeats category had Nigerian artists such as Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Asake, and Ayra Starr. But Tyla walked away with Best Afrobeats, a Nigerian genre.
In addition to the South African crooner, Best R&B and Best African Act went to the singer at the awards ceremony.
On the occasion of her Best Afrobeats award, she took her sister up stage.
“If you guys don’t know (her), this is my sister, Sydney (Seethal),” began Tyla followed by cheers from the audience. “Oh my gosh, guys – I can’t believe it.
“Literally, all the nominees are insane; they have literally taken Afrobeats so far. And I’m so honoured to be winning this award. You know,, it’s insane. But I just want to thank my team.
“I want to thank my family, the Tygers, for voting for me. Thank you to God, obviously. You know Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music.”
