Donald Trump stated he would grant green cards to international students in the United States once they graduated, a plan that contrasts sharply with his radical anti-immigrant ideology — and one that is unlikely to be fulfilled.
“What I want to do, and what I will do, is: When you graduate from college, I believe you should automatically receive a green card as part of your diploma, allowing you to stay in this country,” Trump said on a Thursday episode of “All-In,” a tech podcast hosted by prominent Silicon Valley investors.
“And that includes junior colleges, too,” he said. “Anybody graduates from a college — you go in there for two years or four years, if you graduate or you get a doctorate degree from a college, you should be able to stay in this country.”
Trump, who has been actively courting Silicon Valley investors and executives, said he wanted to advocate for that legislation while in office, but the Covid epidemic took priority. “It’s so sad when we lose people from Harvard and MIT, from the greatest schools, and lesser schools that are phenomenal schools also,”
Trump’s campaign promptly backtracked on those statements, stating that the policy would be enforced considerably more judiciously than Trump proposed on the podcast. Karoline Leavitt, the campaign spokesman, said on Friday.
As one might expect from his campaign’s rephrasing of his commitment, Trump’s words do not line with his virulently anti-immigrant agenda, which includes vows to conduct massive nationwide raids and mass deportations across the country if elected in November.
However, the former president, who began his political career by appealing to xenophobic sentiments, has taken opposing stances on this topic in the past.
While running for president in 2016, his campaign criticised H1-B visas, claiming that they would “decimate American workers.” Trump then indicated he had changed his mind, citing Silicon Valley’s need for highly qualified foreign labour.

In 2020, as president, he suspended new work visas and increased green card limitations. The Associated Press also claimed that Trump’s social media site, Truth Social, sought an H1-B visa for a worker in 2022.
During his almost hour-long participation on the podcast, Trump discussed various other issues. Notably, he revived a previous vow — one he eventually did not fully carry out as president — to release all remaining data on President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, claiming that the CIA “probably” assassinated him.
