Apple iOS 17.4 Update for iPhones and iPadOS 17 for iPads included new iMessage features, personalised iPad lock screens, a Journal app, StandBy Mode on MagSafe charging stands, and other valuable improvements. After a few minor adjustments, 17.4 update has become available.
The iOS 17.4 iPhone update is a vast improvement, but only in the European Union. Apple must now allow alternative app marketplaces (e.g., third-party app stores like SetApp), third-party web browsers with their rendering engines, and a more straightforward way to change the default Safari browser.
These improved new features will only work on iPhones within the EU, as Apple has yet to be legally obligated to roll out identical capabilities in other countries.
Aside from geo-restricted features, iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 now offer automatic transcriptions in Apple Podcasts. When you’re watching an episode, a button displays a transcript highlighted with the current spoken segment, and you can search the full text for specific phrases. Podcasts on Spotify and YouTube provide a similar feature.
The update also includes new emoji such as a mushroom, phoenix, broken chain, and shaking heads. There are also 18 new people and body emojis, with the choice of facing left or right. The complete list of modifications for iPhones and iPads is provided below.
What is new in iOS 17.4?
Apple Podcasts

Emoji
The emoji keyboard now includes new mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, and shaking heads emoji. Additionally, the 18 people and body emoji can be oriented either way.
