According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 1,000 Nigerians have been deceived by fraudulent job opportunities in the United Kingdom.
The United Nations Migration Agency has expressed concern over this issue and urges Nigerians to gather accurate information before making any migration plans.
Laurent De Boeck, the Chief of Mission for IOM, revealed this distressing information during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, December 18, 2023.
He disclosed that many victims had lost substantial amounts of money, some even exceeding $10,000, in exchange for forged employment letters that allowed them to obtain visas.
However, upon arrival in the UK, these individuals discovered that the letters were fraudulent and needed to be authorized by the organizations they claimed to be from. Boeck emphasized that the impact of these scams has affected over a thousand people.
In addition, Boeck highlighted that the IOM is collaborating with various partners to facilitate the repatriation of thousands of individuals, including Nigerians, from Tunisia.
Tunisia recently imposed a migration ban, prompting the need for assistance in returning affected individuals to their home countries.
