A group of robbers have caught the attention of students and inhabitants of MAPOLY in Abeokuta as they persistently ransack homes to pilfer electronic devices such as phones and laptops.
These stolen items are then held for ransom, with the thieves demanding a sum of $100 or more for their return.
The activity of these robbers was brought to light by a netizen who posted about their operations around the MAPOLY vicinity in Abeokuta.
From the information provided in the post, it seems that the thieves primarily focus on invading homes to swipe electronic gadgets. The victims are then contacted and ordered to pay a specific amount of money if they desire to recover their stolen properties.
More so, the culprits are systematic in their approach, as they often leave their Telegram contact information behind for the victims. With this, the victims are instructed to make contact and make a payment via cryptocurrency. Upon payment, they are then told where and when they can collect their stolen goods.
The post read;
“There’s a thief or a gang of thieves currently operating around the student areas of MAPOLY in Abeokuta. They get a tip, break into students’ rooms, steal their phones or laptops, and leave a note with a Telegram handle for them to message if they want to recover their device(s).”
“When contacted, they demand $100 (more or less), depending on the market value of the device, and ask for payment in crypto via a ‘generated’ payment link. After payment is made, they send photos of the house and the exact area where the devices can be retrieved, along with the specific time for pickup.”
Authorities have now dedicated resources to apprehend the perpetrators.
However, in the light of these robbery invasions, a Netizen shared a video showing the face of an alleged thief caught in the process.
