Ed Sheeran explained why he needed to have modern-day communication tools.

The “Shape of You” singer recently featured on a podcast edition of Therapuss with Jake Shane, where he had to explain to the presenter that they couldn’t exchange phone numbers since he doesn’t have a cell phone to contact or text him from.

“I don’t have a phone number, but you can have my email,” the superstar explained. “That isn’t me playing you off either.”

However, the artist admitted that his crew offered him a phone to use during events only for the goal of being active on social media.

He stated, “I enjoy making videos that are subsequently shared on social media. But it isn’t like a functioning phone.”

The musician initially decided to scrap using a mobile phone in December 2015 when he realized he had too many contacts to track.

“I had the same number from like age 15, I think,” he stated. “When I became popular, I had 10,000 contacts in my phone, and people would simply text me all the time. And I was basically in regular contact with a lot of individuals.”

“I feel like with phones, everyone wants you to respond; if you don’t, it’s impolite. Sometimes, it’s difficult to respond because you’re busy or distracted, but once you do, they respond. “And then you’re in like 40 conversations at once.”

As a result, Sheeran decided to give up his phone in favour of an iPad.

His primary mode of communication is now email, and the artist admits that he only checks it once a week.

On Thursdays and Fridays, I sit down, generally in my car. I send out all the emails. Catch up. “Do all the talking to whoever… and that’s it,” the singer stated. “You can really limit your time.”

“I went to dinner after the Celtics yesterday, and you just left your iPad in your hotel room. I ate supper with my dearest buddy. We caught up, had a lengthy conversation, and that was all.”

He also mentioned another email advantage: no one expects an immediate response, so there is no risk of a person’s unfavourable reaction to being left on read.

Sheeran added that not having a phone allows him to be bored, which is when he typically gets song ideas.

“When you’re just sitting doing nothing… that’s when I think of a lyric or a melody, or you’ll have an idea about where to go next in your career,” he stated.

“Being connected all the time has never resulted in anything innovative. Boredom is what makes people think about an iPhone.”
