The Nigerian Labour Congress has instructed Nigerian workers to remain home as the nationwide strike begins today, June 3.
The NLC confirmed this in a post on their X account this morning, June 3.
The decision by Organised Labour to prolong its across-the-nation strike came after a stalemate meeting with the Federal Government and National Assembly leaders over a new national minimum wage and the reversal of the recent increase in power rates.
Labour unions argue that the current minimum wage of ₦30,000 is inadequate for the well-being of Nigerian workers. The award expires in April 2024, five years after former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Minimum Wage Act of 2019. The Act should be revised every five years to ensure that it meets the current economic demands of workers.

Labour later gave the Federal Government a May 31 deadline for a new minimum wage. On May 31, the Labour union called a statewide strike beginning Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the government committee’s inability to agree on a new minimum wage and a reversal of an electricity pricing rise.

During the unsuccessful discussions with the government, Labour rejected three government proposals, the most recent being N60,000. The TUC and NLC withdrew from discussions and demanded a new minimum wage of ₦497,000.
