Midfielder Diawara has chosen to leave the French Under-19 squad due to a disagreement with the French Football Federation’s new regulations that prohibit Muslim players from fasting during Ramadan while training with the national team.

According to ESPN, Diawara was not comfortable with the new rules, which apply to players from U16 level up to the senior team, and has opted to return to his club side, Lyon.

The FFF has confirmed Midfielder Mahamadou Diawaras departure and has called up Nantes’ Dehmaine Tabibou Assoumani as his replacement.

FFF president Philippe Diallo explained in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro that the new rules aim to maintain a “principle of neutrality” and prevent religion from impacting athletes during France duty.

Players called up by French national teams must adhere to the regular schedule and operations of the team, meaning they cannot fast during Ramadan and must make up for the missed days at the end of the religious festival.
