Google AI Boosted As Circle To Search And Gemini Features Lands For Android Users

Google announced a new Circle to Search feature on the 14th of May 2024 at the I/O conference.

Circle To Search

It can now aid pupils with their assignments. When students circle a question, they will receive step-by-step directions to solve a selection of physics and maths word problems without leaving their digital info sheet or syllabus.

Circle to Search will also assist in resolving more difficult issues requiring symbolic formulae, diagrams, and graphs “later this year.” Google’s new LearnLM initiative, which aims to improve its learning products and models, makes all this possible.

According to Google, Circle to Search is accessible on over 100 million devices and will be available on another 100 million by the end of the year.

Gemini on Android will “soon” learn whatever app you’re in and what you’re doing within it to be more helpful. If you are viewing a YouTube video, you may ask Gemini about it. It also allows you to drag & drop produced photos into Gmail, Google Messages, and “other places.”

If you have Gemini Advanced, you may also ask it questions about the PDF files you’re seeing without having to navigate through several pages. This will be rolled out to “hundreds of millions of devices” in the coming months.

Gemini Nano, the on-device foundation model, will receive an upgrade “later this year” for Pixel smartphones, becoming Gemini Nano with Multimodality. This means it will handle text input directly on the device and grasp contextual information such as sights, sounds, and spoken language.

Gemini Nano’s multimodal capabilities will be added to TalkBack “later this year,” allowing blind or low-vision users to “get richer and clearer descriptions of what’s happening in an image.” And because Gemini Nano is on-device, the explanations are speedy and functional even when there is no network connection.

Finally, Google claims it’s developing a new feature that leverages Gemini Nano to deliver real-time notifications during phone calls if it recognizes “conversation patterns commonly associated with scams.” Google presents the example of a “bank representative” asking you to transfer cash immediately.

The protection is entirely done on-device, so the discussion “stays private to you.” This will be an opt-in function, and Google pledges to reveal more “later this year.”
