In a breaking development from Brazil, the Supreme Court has given the green light to the lifting of the ban on Elon Musk‘s social media platform, X (previously known as Twitter).

The decision, announced on Tuesday, October 9, comes in the wake of the platform’s compliance with court directives and payment of hefty fines.

X was previously out of service in Brazil for over a month due to a dispute regarding disinformation. The platform was particularly missed in Brazil, which stands as X’s most extensive Latin American market.

The dispute’s epicentre was Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who finally permitted X’s services in the country. He instructed the local telecom regulator to ensure the availability of the platform within 24 hours for the millions of users across the country.

The tension between Moraes and Musk arose from allegations that X was a channel for disinformation throughout the 2022 election campaign in Brazil.

The situation intensified in August when Moraes banned the platform due to its inability to remove numerous right-wing accounts charged with spreading false information and its failure to appoint a new legal representative within the country.

Despite the clash, X complied with all court orders, including paying fines amounting to around $5.2 million. This case, symbolising the battle between freedom of expression and corporate liability, has been closely monitored across the globe. With the lifting of the ban, X has resumed operations in Brazil.
