Karl Toriola, Chief Executive of MTN Nigeria, has stated that the telecoms business has petitioned the Nigerian Communications Commission for a 100% increase in service tariffs.

He revealed this in an interview with Arise TV on Thursday.

However, the CEO stated that it is unknown whether the Nigerian Communications Commission, the telecom regulator, will approve the request due to the country’s economic hardship.

“We have submitted petitions to regulators for tariff rises of around 100 percent. “I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,” disclosed Toriola.

This comes as anticipation grows that Nigeria’s telecom service tariffs may be raised this year.

Gbenga Adebayo, the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), recently threatened to shut down operations unless tariffs were raised.
