Recently, the US Supreme Court upheld a law that would ban the social network TikTok unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sold it to an American company.
It is a process that has unfolded under the current administration and will now be decided by President-elect Donald Trump upon resuming office as president. Trump said he’d think through all this carefully before making judgements.
This pronounced shift toward keeping TikTok in business in the US should be no surprise, considering he was the one who first advocated the ban during his past administration.
The new ban is scheduled to go into effect on January 19, the day before Trump’s inauguration. The public has reacted in various ways, eagerly awaiting the verdict.
In a comment to CNN, Trump added, “It ultimately goes up to me.” When asked whether he would take steps to block the ban, he said he would decide on this soon.
“Congress has given me the decision, so I’ll be making the decision,” Trump said.
President Trump determined that TikTok raised particular concerns, noting that the platform ‘automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users’ and is susceptible to being used to further the interests of the Chinese government,” the court stated.
