The inclusion of satellite messaging had been a frequently requested feature by Samsung customers following its introduction in the iPhone 14 series. Despite this demand, the company chose to omit the functionality from both the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24 series.
Samsung introduced Satellite Messaging with the Galaxy S25 series, though its implementation was not comprehensive.
The feature’s limited scope precludes significant marketing emphasis or positioning as a prominent life-saving capability.
Samsung’s latest flagship devices incorporate hardware enabling direct-to-device satellite connectivity.
However, the company has delegated the provision of this functionality to network carriers, allowing for customized customer offerings.
Satellite consultant Christian Frhr. von der Ropp noted that Samsung’s approach relies on carrier-managed satellite service deployment. Consequently, in the United States, the service is currently accessible only via Verizon’s network, utilizing Skylo technology.
Skylo holds a monopolistic position within the 5G NTN satellite operator market. Google’s partnership with Skylo, excluding network providers, enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to integrate satellite messaging directly into devices like the Pixel 9 series, eliminating carrier dependency.
This provides satellite connectivity in designated regions. Conversely, Samsung’s strategy leverages existing telecom carriers, making satellite connectivity an opt-in feature dependent on carrier participation.
Therefore, for a carrier like Verizon, the Galaxy S25 series offers satellite connectivity in the US, with potential expansion to other carriers and their respective plans.
However, this approach presents challenges for widespread Android ecosystem adoption.
