Why Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Resigned (VIDEO)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation from office.

The 53-year-old announced his resignation as leader of the country’s ruling Liberal Party, a position he has held since 2013.

He also said that the country’s parliament will be suspended until March 24, when a new leader will be chosen.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa following a protracted political crisis in which key Liberal supporters urged him to step down.

“Parliament has been paralysed for months after what has been the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history,” said Mr Harper.

“This morning, I informed the Governor General that we needed a new session of parliament.” She granted the motion, and the House will be prorogued until March 24.”

Trudeau will serve as prime minister in a caretaker position until a new leader is chosen.

He faced additional pressure after his finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, quit in December due to policy disagreements, including “costly political gimmicks”.

The differences covered how to deal with any US tariffs imposed by Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

Mr Trudeau’s resignation comes as polls show his party is on track to lose badly to the official opposition Conservatives in an election due in late October.
