Chidimma Adetshina, a beauty queen, has found herself at the center of a legal controversy as her mother, Anabela Rungo, has been detained by South African authorities for residing in the country illegally.
The Department of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), apprehended Rungo in Cape Town on Saturday morning.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, Rungo’s South African documentation was revoked in September 2024 after it was discovered that the documents had been obtained fraudulently. This rendered her ineligible to remain in South Africa legally.
Despite this, Rungo allegedly continued to reside in the country using her Mozambican passport, an act described by the department as a “brazen disregard for the legal consequences of her conduct.”
The situation took a more complex turn when it was revealed that Adetshina’s young child was living with Rungo at the Cape Town property. In response, the Department of Home Affairs is working closely with SAPS and the Department of Social Development to ensure the child’s safety and well-being.
“The department is liaising with social development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to safeguard the interests of the minor child,” said spokesperson Siya Qoza. Rungo is set to be handed over to SAPS for further legal proceedings, while the Hawks continue their investigation into potential misrepresentation and fraudulent activities.
The controversy surrounding Adetshina’s citizenship first emerged last year during her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant. Questions were raised about her nationality due to her name and her mother’s background.
Adetshina, who is of Nigerian and Mozambican descent, clarified that she was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican heritage. However, the Home Affairs investigation uncovered allegations of identity fraud involving her mother, casting further doubt on her eligibility.
In light of these developments, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition. Despite the setback, she later competed in Miss Universe Nigeria, where she emerged victorious and won the crown. The ongoing legal proceedings and investigations continue to cast a shadow over her family, as authorities work to resolve the matter.
