Following the introduction of automatically generated captions for videos last year, Google Drive is now rolling out a new feature: searchable video transcripts.
Starting this Monday, Google Drive users will be able to view and search through transcripts of their videos directly within the platform.
This update eliminates the need to rely on third-party transcription services like Otter, streamlining the process of accessing video content. Transcripts will appear in a sidebar alongside the video player, with the currently spoken text highlighted as the video progresses. According to Google, this feature is designed to help users quickly locate specific moments in a video by searching the transcript, while also making it easier to follow along with the content.
To access video transcripts, users simply need to open a video with captions in Google Drive, click the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the video player to open the settings, and select the “Transcript” option. It’s important to note that transcripts are only available for videos that already have captions. Users can check if a video has captions by ensuring the “CC” button in the bottom-right corner of the player is active.
For videos without captions, users can add them by right-clicking the video, selecting “Manage caption tracks,” and then choosing the “generate automatic captions” option.
The new feature is being gradually rolled out over the coming weeks and will be available to all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
