Obasa Heaves Lagos Assembly To Court, Demands Reinstatement

The crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly has escalated, with the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, filing a lawsuit for his immediate reinstatement.

Obasa has approached the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, challenging the legality of his impeachment.

On Friday, court documents have revealed that he is seeking a ruling to overturn his removal and reinstate him as Speaker.

The suit, filed on February 14, 2025, names the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, and the Lagos State House of Assembly as defendants.

Obasa contends that the January 13 plenary meeting where he was impeached was not properly convened, thus rendering the proceedings unconstitutional.

The court’s submission draws on constitutional provisions and Assembly resolutions to argue that the impeachment was conducted outside of legal procedures.

Obasa asserts that lawmakers convened during a break without formally re-assembling, thereby rendering the decision invalid.

His legal initiative follows a period of unsuccessful political negotiations involving prominent politicians in Lagos and Abuja, including those loyal to President Bola Tinubu.

Despite Tinubu’s instruction to reinstate Obasa, the ongoing resistance from lawmakers has prolonged the conflict.

Many are apprehensive that the Speaker, who was removed, may seek vengeance against those who supported his removal.

Muraina Akanbi Taiwo, a key member of the Lagos APC’s Governance Advisory Council, has respectfully declined calls for Obasa’s reinstatement.

He maintains that Tinubu’s influence should not be overridden by internal Assembly decisions. Taiwo reportedly stated, “Tinubu is not the sole authority in Lagos,” indicating a significant rift within the ruling party.
