A civil suit, accusing the hip-hop moguls Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault against a 13-year-old girl in 2000, has been terminated by the alleged victim, as per documents submitted to the federal court in New York on Friday.
The plaintiff’s filing states that the lawsuit was “voluntarily terminated with prejudice.” Further details were not immediately disclosed.
“Today marks a significant victory. The ill-informed, fictitious and disturbing allegations have been dismissed,” stated Roc Nation, a company established by Jay-Z, in a statement on their social media.
The document was signed by Shawn Carter, the legal identity of Jay-Z.
Upon receiving a drink, she experienced a lightheaded feeling, as the lawsuit suggests, and proceeded to enter a room with a bed for rest. Carter, Combs, and another woman entered the room, and the rappers proceeded to sexually assault her, as the lawsuit asserts.
The woman, who is now residing in Alabama, is seeking unspecified damages. In December, U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres indicated that the woman has the option to proceed anonymously at this early stage of the litigation.
Carter expressed his concern after the lawsuit was submitted, stating that it was a “blackmail maneuver.” He and his legal team expressed that it was a “shaking-down” tactic by the lawyer who initiated the suit, Tony Buzbee.
In response, Buzbee responded on Instagram, asserting that there was a “coordinated and aggressive campaign” to discredit him and his clients, but the “truth will be revealed.”
Following the court filing on Friday, Carter expressed on social media that when a lawyer initiates a suit, he is often faced with the dilemma of hiding behind Jane Doe and realizing that the financial gain is unlikely to succeed.
This leads to a situation where they can simply walk away without any repercussions. The system has indeed failed.
He further stated that the courts must uphold the rights of victims, but they must also uphold the innocence of those accused without any shred of evidence.
“May the truth prevail for all victims and those falsely accused equally,” Carter said.
Combs is facing a substantial array of sexual assault lawsuits, many of which were initiated by Buzbee. The plaintiffs allege that they were subjected to abuse at parties in New York, California, and Florida.
Combs’ legal representatives have dismissed Buzbee’s claims as “irrelevant publicity campaigns, intended to extract financial compensation from celebrities who fear the spread of falsehoods about them.”
Combs has been incarcerated in New York City since September, awaiting a criminal trial on federal charges of sex trafficking.
