Before global hits like Peru put his name on the map, Fireboy DML’s journey was one of quiet determination and resilience.

In a recent interview on the 90s Baby Show, the Nigerian singer opened up about his early days chasing music dreams in Lagos, far from the fame he now enjoys.

Fresh out of university, Fireboy moved to Lagos without connections, a solid plan, or certainty. He spent his days writing songs, performing for small crowds, and shielding his struggles from family back home.
“It was survival,” he admitted during the interview, describing how music became his escape and lifeline. Then came the message that changed his life.

According to Fireboy, his career took a dramatic turn when he received an unexpected WhatsApp message from Nigerian music icon Olamide.

At the time, Olamide wasn’t even scouting for new talent. But something about Fireboy’s sound stood out. “He just texted me,” Fireboy recalled. “It was so random. He wasn’t looking to sign anyone.”

That message marked the start of a life-changing chapter. Fireboy was officially signed to YBNL Nation, joining the label’s growing roster of stars. This sudden breakthrough felt like a twist of fate. “It was literally like someone sliding into your destiny,” he joked.

Soon after joining YBNL, Fireboy released Jealous, a track that first appeared on the YBNL Mafia Family compilation in 2018. It quickly gained traction and became his breakout hit.

That success paved the way for his debut album Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps, which showcased his unique blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and soul, a style he calls Afro-Life.

From there, his star only rose higher. International tours, sold-out shows, and collaborations with global artists followed, firmly cementing his place in the music scene. Fireboy DML’s journey has become an inspiring tale of talent meeting opportunity and taking full advantage of it.

With success, however, came some unexpected challenges and hilarious rumours. One such rumour claimed that he had purchased a private jet. “Even my mum believed it,” Fireboy laughed. He used the moment to reflect on how fame often comes with odd headlines and the occasional misunderstanding.
Still, he remains grounded. Rather than chasing headlines, Fireboy says he’s more focused on telling authentic stories through his music.

Now, with his latest project Adedamola, named after his real name; Fireboy is in a more introspective phase. He shared that this album explores personal growth, purpose, and evolution. It’s clear he’s maturing not just as an artist, but as a storyteller.

“My sound is Afro-Life,” he explained. “It’s emotional. It’s honest. It’s real.” The genre represents his blend of smooth melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and African rhythms.

As fans continue to celebrate his music, Fireboy DML’s journey from an unknown songwriter to a global sensation is proof that perseverance, talent, and a little divine timing can lead to greatness.
