Nigeria-Mexico Team Up to Strengthen Trade Relations

In a bid to strengthen economic and cultural ties, the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria officially launched the Nigeria-Mexico Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) and introduced its new Board of Directors on Tuesday in Abuja.

The event was attended by top government officials, business leaders, diplomats, and representatives of various trade organizations. 

It marks a fresh step in Nigeria-Mexico trade relations, aimed at unlocking business opportunities and deepening cooperation between both countries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Alfredo Miranda, Mexico’s Ambassador to Nigeria, described the launch of NMCC as a new phase in the relationship between the two nations. He highlighted that the chamber will act as a bridge for business, ideas, and innovation between Nigeria and Mexico.

“This is a moment to work together, create new narratives, and prove that Nigeria and Mexico are strong forces in their respective continents,” he said. “The NMCC will be a driving force in supporting businesses from both countries. 

It will help promote trade and investment, provide vital market insights, and encourage mutual understanding.”

Ambassador Miranda also expressed confidence in the future of Nigeria-Mexico economic collaboration, noting that even better trade results could be achieved in the coming years.

Representing Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Anderson Madubuike, Director of the Economic, Trade and Investment Department, emphasized the importance of growing bilateral ties.

“There’s so much potential between our two nations to contribute to the global economy. The establishment of NMCC is timely and a step in the right direction,” he said. “African countries need to take their rightful place in the global economy, and strong partnerships like this one can help make that happen.”

Also present was the Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Mr. Idi Mukhtar, who welcomed the opportunity for agricultural growth. 

He noted that Nigeria imports up to $1.5 billion worth of dairy products annually, and expressed hope that the NMCC will attract investments into Nigeria’s red meat and dairy industries.

“We are committed to improving livestock production, managing animal diseases, and boosting dairy processing. This is a great chance for local and international investors to partner with us,” he said.

NMCC President, Arim Pete, described the launch as the beginning of a new journey built on trust, opportunity, and shared vision. She noted Mexico’s economic strength, being the 12th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.8 trillion, and stressed the opportunities that exist for both countries.

“Our focus will be on trade with Nigeria. The global trade landscape has changed, and we must adapt. Nigeria and Mexico have economies that complement each other. Now is the time to take action and build on this foundation,” she said.

The event also had in attendance Mr. Dele Oye, President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), as well as other leaders from the private sector and diplomatic community.
