Nigerian Migrants Arrested for Drug Trafficking in Libya’s Samnu District

Three Nigerian migrants have been arrested by the Samnu Police Department in southern Libya over allegations of drug trafficking, according to a report shared by Migrant Rescue Watch on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

The individuals were reportedly apprehended in possession of a quantity of hashish believed to be intended for illegal distribution. The arrest took place in Samnu, a town located in the Murzuq district, an area often flagged for its involvement in cross-border crimes such as smuggling and human trafficking due to its proximity to Libya’s southern borders.

This arrest forms part of a wider crackdown on drug and human trafficking networks operating within the region, particularly those involving migrants. Libyan authorities have intensified efforts in recent months to curb the illegal movement of drugs and people across the country’s porous southern border.

The police have not yet disclosed the names of the suspects. However, they confirmed that the case has been transferred to the public prosecution for further legal action and investigation.

A statement from Migrant Rescue Watch read: “Samnu Police Dept. arrested 3 #migrants of Nigerian nationality on charges of drug trafficking. The trio were found in possession of quantity of hashish earmarked for sale. The case was referred to public prosecution.”

Libya remains a hotspot for migrant movement, especially for those seeking to cross into Europe through the Mediterranean. Many migrants, including Nigerians, face dangerous conditions and exploitation along the way, often becoming entangled in illegal activities or falling victim to criminal networks.

Security forces continue to monitor and carry out targeted operations in the region, aiming to dismantle trafficking routes and reduce crime involving vulnerable migrant populations.
