Eedris Abdulkareem, a veteran Nigerian rapper and activist, has claimed he was offered a bribe of N200 million to continue criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration through his music and public activity.

In a video posted to his social media page, the singer stated that a man claiming to be a senator approached him and offered financial support in exchange for his controversial protest song, ”Tell Your Papa,” which has received much attention online.

“So I received a call from a criminal who claimed to be ‘Honourable.’ He didn’t even allow me to hear his name. “When I asked again, he claimed to be a senator,” Eedris says in the video.

He informed me that he was meeting with Seyi Tinubu and other government officials.

“He added, ‘They’ll call and bribe you, but don’t listen to them. We will be sponsoring you underground. I told him straight up that I wasn’t interested.

The rapper rejected the N200 million offer, urging the caller and people behind the proposition to stay away from him.

“Do you believe you can use me as a caricature? You’re mad. “I’ve been ready for you all for a long time,” he said in the video.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) banned Tell Your Papa, a song that openly criticizes the current regime, on April 10.

However, the restriction has sparked opposition from several rights and arts organizations.

The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) denounced the ban, claiming it could backfire and increase the song’s popularity during the economic downturn.

Similarly, the Media Rights Agenda called the move a misuse of regulatory authority.

Ayomide Eweje, Programme Officer at Media Rights Agenda, stated, “The NBC has entirely misinterpreted its function. It functions more as a propagandist instrument than a neutral media regulator.”
