Travel Made Easier As Nigeria’s Contactless Passport Reaches More Countries- NIS Affirms

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially started the second phase of its Nigeria’s contactless passport application system in four more countries: the United States, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mexico, as part of efforts to make passport renewal easier for Nigerians living abroad.

This development was announced on Sunday in Abuja by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr. Akinsola Akinlabi, via the service’s official X (previously Twitter) page.

According to the release, the system went live in the United States on April 11, followed by Jamaica and Mexico on April 14, with Brazil joining in on the same day.

Akinlabi explained that the project is part of the service’s larger digital transformation plan, which aims to improve convenience and reduce in-person trips to passport centres.

“The application is currently available on the Google Play Store as NIS Mobile, allowing Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting any passport center for biometric enrollment,” he stated.

He also stated that an Apple Store version will be released shortly, and that an improved edition of the NIS Mobile App for both Android and iOS platforms is in the works to provide a more smooth user experience.

With its most recent extension, the contactless biometric passport application system is now available in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Europe, and Asia.

However, the service stressed that the system has yet to be deployed in Australia and Nigeria, with launch dates to be announced later.

Akinlabi emphasised the NIS’ commitment to using technology to provide efficient and accessible services to Nigerians worldwide.
