Why I Refused To Adopt Olu Jacob’s Surname- Veteran Nollywood Actress, Joke Silva Says

Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has shared her reasons for not adopting her husband, renowned actor Olu Jacobs’ surname following their marriage, noting that it was a deliberate choice supported by her husband himself.

In a recent episode of the Leadership podcast led by Stephen Akintayo, the 62-year-old film icon clarified that it was Jacobs who recommended she keep her maiden name to maintain her developing professional identity.

When the host inquired why she chose not to change her last name after getting married, Silva replied:

“He [Olu Jacobs] actually encouraged me to keep it. He realized how important branding is. He mentioned that my brand was already established as Joke Silva, and altering it years after gaining recognition could potentially create issues for me.”

She also mentioned that while she publicly identifies as Joke Silva, those close to the pair always referred to her as Mrs. Jacobs.

“Thus, we preserved the name Joke Silva as the brand, but in personal circles, everyone recognized me as Mrs. Jacobs. The name change didn’t really hold significance.”

Silva and Jacobs, who have been together for more than thirty years, are considered one of Nollywood’s most esteemed couples. Their lasting affection and mutual esteem continue to inspire many both within and outside the entertainment realm.
