Your Samsung Phones May Restart Automatically- Here’s Why!

Samsung users should not be scared if their Galaxy phone restarts automatically after being idle for several days.

A recent update to Google Play services adds an auto-restart functionality to enhance Android devices’ security, including Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets.

This feature causes your device to reboot automatically if locked for three consecutive days.

With the rollout of Google Play Services version 25.14, Android devices will automatically restart if they stay locked for 72 hours straight. This is designed to improve your phone’s security, lowering the risk of data theft in specific scenarios.

Here’s How It Works

The auto-reboot feature activates after three days of inactivity, returning your Samsung device to a Before First Unlock (BFU) state. In this mode, data becomes encrypted, and features like fingerprint and face unlock are disabled until you input your PIN or password.

In BFU mode, accessing your Galaxy phone’s data is more difficult than it is in the After First Unlock (AFU) state. This safeguards against unauthorized entry if your device is misplaced or stolen, helping to keep your personal information secure.

The rollout of Google Play services 25.14 is expected to happen over the following week, but the auto-restart function may take a few weeks to become active.

Since it is delivered through Play services, Samsung devices will receive it without needing a One UI firmware update.
