The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded its 2024 scholarship to 164 financially challenged students selected from various universities across Nigeria.

This announcement was made during a press conference held on Saturday at the Yuli Campus of Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State.

The Convener of ASUU’s Grant, Research, and Publications Committee, Professor Christopher Piwuna, made the disclosure. He was represented at the event by Lawan Abubakar, a former ASUU Bauchi-Zone Coordinator.

According to Professor Piwuna, two students were chosen from each of the union’s 79 branches after a thorough selection process. Each beneficiary received a non-refundable cash sum of N200,000.

He explained that ASUU ensured gender balance in selecting the recipients and also included physically challenged students to support their access to quality education.

“Our Union has managed the Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship for years,” Piwuna said. “But we decided not only to continue that legacy but also to create our own scholarship to further assist poor students, especially in the face of growing hardship.”

He emphasized that the ASUU 2024 scholarship was introduced in response to the rising cost of education and government policies that make it difficult for poor students and their families to cope.

“When we suggested that the NELFUND scholarship should be a grant, we meant it. ASUU’s own scholarship is not a loan, beneficiaries are not required to pay it back,” he added.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants had to provide proof of financial need and demonstrate academic excellence through a strong Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
