A new pope has been chosen after white smoke emerged from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in Rome this evening.

The new pope, US Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who is to be known as Pope Leo XIV.

The 133 Cardinal electors who convened in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel have elected the new Pope.
He is expected to make an appearance shortly at the main window of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, a 73-year-old Frenchman born in Morocco, is anticipated to deliver the announcement unless he is selected as Pope.

The 133 cardinals, who cast their votes to find the successor to the late Pope Francis, were secluded for the confidential conclave that began on Wednesday evening.
The first sign of black smoke was seen approximately three hours and 15 minutes after the cardinals locked themselves in, which was met with disappointment by the onlookers at the Vatican.
Earlier today, another plume of smoke was released, indicating that none of the candidates had achieved the required two-thirds majority, 89 votes, until the breakthrough occurred this evening.
