This white smoke is a traditional sign that the cardinals, who have been meeting in secret, have reached an agreement on who will become the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The decision came on the second day of the voting process, known as a conclave. A total of 133 cardinals from around the world were involved in the vote to choose a successor to Pope Francis.

Millions of Catholics across the globe are now eagerly waiting to see who will lead the Church forward. Once the new pope steps onto the balcony, he will give his first blessing as the new spiritual leader of the Church’s 1.4 billion followers.
