Maryam Abacha University Shuts Female Hostels Over Safety and Discipline Issues

The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has ordered the immediate shutdown of the Al-Ansar Indabo female hostels located in Hotoro and UDB Road, Kano.

This decision comes after several reports raised concerns about the safety and conduct of students living in these hostels.

The announcement was made in a statement released on Monday by Dr. Hamza Garba, the university’s Vice President of Campus Life.

According to the statement, the university has also withdrawn its approval for the use of the Al-Ansar Indabo hostels as official student accommodations. This move is part of the university’s efforts to provide a safe and morally upright environment for all students.

“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro,” Dr. Garba stated.

He added that the hostels did not meet the required standards set by the university for private student accommodations. 

He listed several violations, including, reports of immoral behaviour, inconsistent water and electricity supply, violent incidents among students, unauthorized movement at night and sharing facilities with unknown tenants

“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students,” Dr. Garba said.

As a result, Maryam Abacha University female hostels at Al-Ansar Indabo will no longer be used, and all affected students have been asked to vacate the premises immediately after the current semester examinations.

The university has warned students against returning to or continuing to live in these hostels, stressing that the decision is in the best interest of their safety and security.

To ensure full compliance, the university management has begun working with security agencies. 

Students and parents who need help finding approved and safer accommodation options are encouraged to reach out to the Office of the Vice President, Campus Life. They can do this by emailing vp-campuslife@maaun.edu.ng.

The university further stated that it will not be held responsible for any issues that arise from ignoring this directive.
