Niger State: Over 100 people have been reported dead after a devastating flood-impacted region of Niger State on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Heavy rainfall caused the calamity, which ravaged areas near the city of Mokwa, resulting in destruction, fatalities, and dozens still unaccounted for.

Ibrahim Audu Husseini, the spokesperson for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), stated that 115 bodies have been recovered so far, with the expectation that the casualty count will rise further.

“We have recovered 115 bodies up to this point, and more are likely to be found because the flood originated from a distance and carried people into the River Niger. Bodies are still being discovered downstream, so the toll will continue to increase,” Husseini informed AFP.

Rescue teams are actively engaged in emergency response operations, combing through debris and flood-affected regions in search of survivors and victims.

Husseini noted that entire families have been impacted, mentioning one instance where just four out of twelve family members have been located.

He also indicated that some victims were discovered under collapsed buildings, and heavy machinery, like excavators, will be necessary to recover bodies still trapped under the debris.

Earlier, a provisional death count issued on Friday by another NSEMA representative, Hussaini Isah, had reported the number at 88.

The revised total reflects the widening scope of the disaster as recovery efforts progress.

The flood has inundated numerous homes and displaced hundreds of residents. Officials are advising communities located downstream of the River Niger to stay vigilant as the situation unfolds.
