NIN Authentication: Nigeria Launches New Service for Safer, Easier Identity Verification

The Federal Government has introduced a new identity verification service called NIN Authentication, aimed at making it easier and more secure for Nigerians and legal residents to confirm their identities using their National Identification Number (NIN).

This was announced on Tuesday in Lagos by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

According to Adegoke, the Presidency has directed all government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to start using the NIN Authentication platform for identity confirmation.

He noted that the launch of this service is part of NIMC’s mission to provide a reliable and secure digital identity system in Nigeria.

“This supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve how identities are managed in the country,” Adegoke said.

NIN Authentication is a new digital service that allows users to verify their identity through the web, mobile applications, or via API connections. It is designed to protect user data, safeguard privacy, and simplify access to public and private sector services.

The official tool for accessing this platform is the NINAuth application, which connects directly to NIMC’s central database. It ensures that people remain in control of their personal information and must give consent before their data can be used—for example, in Know Your Customer (KYC) processes or background checks.

The new service brings several advantages, including: Stronger data security, protection against unauthorized data access, greater control for individuals over how their information is shared and a single sign-on feature for convenient access to various services.

Adegoke explained that NIN Authentication can be used for multiple essential services, such as: SIM card registration and replacement, passport and visa applications, tax registration and filings, accessing financial services, applying for driver’s licence renewals and participating in government welfare programs.

The platform is built to work well with other digital systems and allows for real-time identity verification through API integration. This makes it easier for service providers to follow national identity regulations while also improving their service delivery.

NIMC has confirmed that NIN Authentication is now the official tool for all NIN-related identity checks in the country.
