Nursing Students Protest at UNICAL Over Arrest of Colleagues Accused of SIM Card Theft
Nursing students at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have taken to the streets in protest following the arrest of three fellow students. The arrested individuals were accused of stealing the SIM card of a patient who had passed away.
This development was first reported through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) by a user identified as @ChuksEricE. According to the post, the protesting students blocked all entry points to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) to demand the release of their detained colleagues.
The caption read:
“Nurses at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital have blocked all entrances to the facility in an ongoing protest following the arrest and detention of three of their colleagues by the police, who are accused of allegedly stealing the SIM card of a deceased patient.”
So far, the police have not issued any official statement confirming the arrests or the allegations. The silence has left many Nigerians wondering what truly happened, and several social media users have taken to online platforms to share their thoughts.

The UNICAL nursing students protest quickly gained attention on X, with a number of users posting reactions and expressing frustration over the situation.

The protest videos shared online show dozens of nursing students dressed in their uniforms, chanting and marching peacefully within the school premises and around the hospital. They carried placards and demanded justice for their colleagues, insisting that the arrests were unfair and lacked solid evidence.
Students who joined the protest claimed that the police acted too quickly without proper investigation. Some alleged that the students may have only been in possession of the deceased patient’s items as part of hospital procedures and should not have been treated as criminals without due process.
A student protester, who asked to remain anonymous, said:
“We are angry because we believe our colleagues are being treated unjustly. Nurses are here to care for patients, not to be criminalized without facts.”
