Owa Obokun Adimula Coronation: Ijesaland Set for Week-Long Royal Celebration in May

Ilesa, the cultural heart of Ijesaland in Osun State, is set to host a grand and historic celebration as the coronation of the 49th Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, begins on May 16, 2025.

According to a statement from Chief Shola Oshunkeye, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee of the Coronation Committee, the week-long activities will wrap up with the official coronation on Friday, May 23, at the Owa’s Palace in Ilesa.

“All events will take place in Ilesa, the capital of Ijesaland,” the statement noted. “It promises to be a royal celebration filled with rich cultural displays, the kind rarely seen in this part of the country.”

The Owa Obokun Adimula coronation ceremonies will begin with a Jumat service at the Ilesa Central Mosque on Friday, May 16, at 1 p.m.

The next day, Saturday, May 17, a cultural celebration will be held at the Obokungbusi Hall, showcasing traditional dances and heritage performances.

Later that evening, the palace courtyard will host Isese Night, a spiritual and cultural event rooted in Yoruba tradition.

On Monday, May 19, the monarch will embark on a royal tour of Ijesa zones from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., meeting with community leaders and residents. The following day, Tuesday, May 20, will feature the grand finale of the coronation sporting activities.

The day will kick off with the Owa Ajimoko III Ijesa Marathon at 7 a.m., followed by the finals of the coronation football competition, medal presentation, and award ceremony at Ilesa Grammar School Sports Arena starting at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, May 21, will be dedicated to charity as prominent guests visit orphanages in and around Ilesa. In the afternoon, the Ijesa Mineral Resources Development Forum (IMRDF) will host a video documentary and workshop at the University of Ilesa.

Sporting and intellectual activities continue on Thursday, May 22, with a golf kitty and a symposium at Royal Park International Hotel, Iloko-Ijesa.

During this event, the Ajimoko III Foundation will launch its scholarship and empowerment scheme, aimed at supporting education and youth development in Ijesaland.

The main event, the coronation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23, at the Owa’s Palace in Ilesa. A grand reception is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ilesa Grammar School, where guests and dignitaries from across Nigeria are expected to gather.

The coronation will conclude with a thanksgiving service on Sunday, May 25, at the Methodist Church, Otapete, Ilesa.
