The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner lost contact with air traffic control shortly after departing from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. It was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.

In a press update on Friday, Indian Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kanan Desai, confirmed that 265 bodies have been recovered so far. Authorities also believe that around 24 people on the ground may have been killed when the plane slammed into homes and buildings in the city.

Desai noted that the death toll may still rise as rescue teams continue to search through the wreckage with sniffer dogs. “We are doing our best to recover every victim and identify the remains,” he said.

The crash site, now a scene of twisted metal, debris, and scorched homes, has drawn dozens of emergency workers and volunteers. Families of those on board have gathered nearby, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
