Aliko Dangote Retires as Chairman of Dangote Sugar After 20 Years

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and founder of the Dangote Group, will officially step down as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc on June 16, 2025. This marks the end of his 20-year leadership at the company.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the company secretary, Temitope Hassan, Dangote’s retirement is in line with the company’s succession plan and its commitment to strong corporate governance.

Dangote, who took on the role of Chairman in 2005, has been praised for his key role in building Dangote Sugar into a major player in Nigeria’s sugar industry. During his time as Chairman, the company expanded its operations and led several development projects aimed at boosting local sugar production.

“Following the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read.

One of Dangote’s major contributions was supporting large-scale Backward Integration Projects across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States. These projects were launched to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported sugar and to support local production.

The company also announced that Mr. Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director, will take over as the new Chairman starting June 16, 2025. Mr. Ekpe is a well-respected business leader and former Group CEO of Ecobank, with vast experience in banking and corporate governance.

“We welcome Mr. Ekpe to his new role and look forward to the next chapter in our company’s journey under his leadership,” the company said.

The board also used the opportunity to thank Aliko Dangote for his dedication, leadership, and vision over the past two decades.
