Diphtheria Outbreak in Edo State Claims Two Lives 

A diphtheria outbreak in Edo State has left two people dead, with three more cases confirmed by the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

The announcement came during an emergency health meeting on Tuesday in Benin City, led by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole.

Dr. Oshiomhole described the situation as deeply troubling and called for urgent, united action. He explained that diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the throat and nose, warning that without timely treatment, it can lead to serious complications or even death.

The meeting brought together key health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other partners who are now actively involved in containing the spread of the disease.

According to Dr. Oshiomhole, the rising number of cases, along with growing health threats like antibiotic resistance and viral infections, calls for a stronger, more coordinated health response.

He emphasized the need for quick medical intervention, stronger monitoring of cases, and better communication between health agencies. 

Health officials are also working to make vaccines more available and are encouraging early reporting of symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and difficulty breathing.

Dr. Oshiomhole acknowledged the swift response by UBTH and expressed gratitude to local and international health bodies for their support. He assured residents that the state government is fully committed to managing the diphtheria outbreak in Edo State and protecting the lives of citizens.

He also urged people to remain calm but stay alert, emphasizing that early detection and proper care are essential in preventing further deaths. “This is not a time to panic, but to prepare, inform, and act responsibly,” he said.

Health officials are continuing to trace contacts of infected individuals and are working within communities to raise awareness. The goal is to keep the public informed and ensure that the disease does not spread further.

As the situation unfolds, the government and its partners remain on high alert, promising timely updates and actions to contain the outbreak. Residents are advised to follow health guidelines and seek medical help immediately if they notice any symptoms.
