Fresh Makurdi–Naka Road Attack Leaves Several Dead, Many Injured in Benue

Another deadly incident has occurred along the Makurdi–Naka road in Benue State, as suspected armed herdsmen launched a surprise attack on Friday evening. The violence has reportedly left several people dead and many others injured.

According to local sources, the attackers struck suddenly, targeting travelers on the road and leaving a scene of chaos and fear. Many commuters were forced to flee for their lives or remain stranded as the attack unfolded.

This area of the Makurdi–Naka road has become increasingly dangerous in recent weeks. Residents and travelers say that armed Fulani groups have practically taken control of the route, despite ongoing promises from the government and military that the area would be secured.

“The road is no longer safe. People are afraid to travel through it. This attack is just one of many in recent times,” a local said.

The latest violence comes shortly after Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, moved his operational base to Benue State to better handle the worsening security situation. His visit had raised hopes among residents that the region would soon see an end to the wave of deadly attacks.

Unfortunately, this new Makurdi–Naka road attack has only added to the growing concerns of locals who feel abandoned and unprotected.

“This shows that we are still very much at the mercy of these attackers,” another source added. “We need urgent help.”

So far, there has been no official statement from the military or state government regarding the number of casualties or steps being taken to prevent further attacks. However, eyewitnesses fear that the death toll may rise, considering the scale of the ambush.

Benue State has long suffered from clashes between farmers and herdsmen, often resulting in destruction, loss of lives, and displacement of communities. This ongoing violence has made life difficult for people living in rural and farming areas, with many forced to abandon their homes and farmlands.

As of now, the Makurdi–Naka road remains tense, with many travelers avoiding the route altogether for fear of more attacks.

Authorities are being urged to act fast and restore peace to the region. Locals say only strong and visible military presence can stop the armed groups and ensure the safety of lives and property.
