A video showing a group of Nigerian women currently locked up in a prison in Bamako, Mali, has gone viral, sparking concern across social media.

Nigerian Women in Mali Prison Cry Out for Help Over Poor Conditions

The video reveals the poor living conditions the women are facing and the kind of food they are being served behind bars.

The video was first posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @chude__. In the clip, the women—many of them—can be seen protesting from inside the prison, calling for help and demanding to be set free.

In the background, voices of the women are heard crying out for freedom, clearly frustrated by their situation. One of them showed the meal they are given and said, “This is the food they feed us here in Mali. We’re suffering. We need freedom.”

Since the video surfaced online, it has drawn strong reactions from Nigerians and others on social media. Many people expressed shock and sympathy, while others called on both the Nigerian and Malian governments to step in and address the issue.

Here are some of the reactions from X users:

@Alkebulans64620: “It’s not that sad oh they are totally innocents but it’s a very disturbing circumstance when our Africans government leaders conscience does not judge them for the sake of humanity…”

@Mr__Gem: “If not for bad governance and corruption, what business do these ladies have in Mali?”

@Chumah_NG: “This is heart-wrenching.”

@victor_onyibest: “What’s their crime?”

@HIBILLIONEAR: “To be at the mercy of Nigeria coming to your rescue is not a very good place to be. This country has zero value for lives.”
