Popular Benue Gospel Singer New Jerusalem Dies at 53

The Christian community in Benue State and beyond is mourning the death of one of its beloved music ministers, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, famously known as New Jerusalem.

The well-known Benue gospel singer passed away at the age of 53, leaving behind a rich legacy of faith-driven music and ministry.

New Jerusalem was celebrated for using Tiv Swange music ,a popular traditional genre, as a means of spreading the gospel. 

His unique style of blending cultural rhythms with Christian messages made him not only a household name in Nigeria but also earned him recognition on international stages.

One of the most heartfelt tributes came from former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, who visited the singer’s family at their residence in Makurdi.

Speaking during the condolence visit, Ortom described New Jerusalem as “deeply spiritual” and praised the global reach of his music. 

The former governor fondly recalled hearing the artist’s songs being used during a teaching session in Australia, showing how far his ministry had gone.

Ortom, who had grown close to the late singer’s family, promised to continue supporting both them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe.

His long-standing relationship with the family was further highlighted by a touching revelation from the singer’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve. According to him, one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” as a way to honour the former governor’s unwavering support over the years.

The late New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and extended family members. 

His burial has been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, in his hometown of Sati Agirigi, located in Mbamo, Shitile area of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.

Fans and fellow gospel artists continue to share their tributes online, remembering New Jerusalem not only for his music but also for his passionate ministry and impact on Christian worship in Tiv communities and beyond.
