American R&B star R Kelly was recently hospitalised from prison after collapsing at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina.

The 58-year-old singer, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering, was taken to Duke University Hospital on Friday, June 13.

According to his lawyer, Kelly had been placed in solitary confinement on June 10. During this time, he was given medication by prison staff. Just three days later, he reportedly felt dizzy, tried to stand, and collapsed. He then crawled to the door of his cell before losing consciousness.

His legal team claims that once at the hospital, doctors discovered he had been given a dangerously high dose of medication. A recent court filing stated, “At the hospital, he learned that he had been administered an overdose quantity of his medications that threatened his life.”

The same document also alleges that prison officials refused to allow Kelly to undergo surgery, even after a surgical consultation recommended it.

Even more troubling, Kelly reportedly overheard a prison officer make a chilling comment during his ambulance ride. According to the court filing, the officer said, “This is going to open a whole new can of worms.”

The hospitalization comes shortly after Kelly’s lawyer filed an emergency motion, claiming that three officials from the Bureau of Prisons were plotting to have the singer killed by another inmate. As a result, his legal team is now pushing for Kelly to be released from prison and placed under home detention for his safety.

The incident raises serious concerns about the treatment of inmates in federal custody and the safety of high-profile prisoners like Kelly. His lawyer is urging the court to investigate the alleged overdose and threats, stressing that the singer’s life may be in danger.

As of now, R Kelly remains behind bars while his legal team continues to push for a change in his detention status.
