Sanwo-Olu Mourns Olu of Epe, Oba Shefiu Adewale

Lagos State is in mourning following the death of the 19th Olu of Epe, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, who passed away in the early hours of Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the age of 86.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu extended his heartfelt condolences to the royal family and the entire Epe Kingdom.

He praised the late monarch for his unwavering commitment to the growth and development of Epe and his meaningful contributions to the progress of Lagos State.

“The late Oba was a visionary leader who dedicated his life to serving the people of Epe and Lagos State. His efforts in advancing the community will be remembered as part of his enduring legacy,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The death of the respected traditional ruler was confirmed by High Chief Odedeogboro Balogun of Epe Kingdom, Musiliu Adeniyi. According to him, the king peacefully passed away on Saturday morning.

During his lifetime, the Olu of Epe left a lasting mark, especially through his public service. He played a key role in Lagos State’s civil service, where he rose through the ranks to become the Director of Administration in the Ministry of Education.

He also served as the Executive Secretary in the Ministry of Lands before ascending to the throne.

“He was a passionate civil servant who gave his best to Lagos State before he became a king. His leadership in Epe and his efforts to uphold traditional values have been deeply appreciated by all,” Chief Adeniyi said.

Oba Shefiu Adewale was known for promoting peace, culture, and unity within his community. Many residents of Epe have described his death as a great loss to the town and the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu offered prayers for the soul of the late monarch and for comfort for the royal family and the people of Epe. “I pray that Almighty God grants him eternal rest and gives his family and the people of Epe the strength to bear this loss,” he said.

The passing of the Olu of Epe has left a significant void in the traditional leadership of Lagos State, especially in Epe, where he was deeply loved and respected.

Tributes have been pouring in from both political and traditional leaders, acknowledging his years of service and dedication.

Plans for the late king’s burial rites are expected to be announced soon by the royal family and the Epe traditional council.

Meanwhile, the people of Epe continue to mourn the departure of a beloved ruler who spent decades working for the betterment of his community and state.

Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale will be remembered not just as a monarch, but as a humble civil servant, a respected leader, and a true son of Lagos who made history with his impactful reign.
