“Such Ingratitude”: Elon Musk Accuses Trump of Downplaying His Support
In a surprising online outburst, tech billionaire Elon Musk has taken a swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump, claiming he played a key role in Trump’s 2024 election win. Musk didn’t hold back, accusing Trump of being ungrateful for his support.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO wrote, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election. Dems would control the House, and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”
He followed up with a short comment: “Such ingratitude.”
Elon Musk accuses Trump just days after criticizing the president’s new tax and spending bill, which he described as a “disgusting abomination.” Musk also warned that Trump’s plan to remove the electric vehicle (EV) mandate could hurt the entire EV industry—a sector Musk has been leading for years through Tesla.
In response to Musk’s remarks, President Trump downplayed the billionaire’s influence on the election outcome. Speaking about the key state of Pennsylvania, Trump said, “I would have won Pennsylvania regardless of Elon. I’m very disappointed with Elon.”

Trump added that since Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was not chosen as Kamala Harris’ running mate, it made his victory in the state even more certain. “I would have won Pennsylvania by a lot,” he said.
Their once-friendly relationship now seems to be under strain. From the Oval Office, during a media chat before meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump reflected on his past dealings with Musk. “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore. He hasn’t said anything bad about me yet, but I’m sure that’ll be next. I’m very disappointed… I’ve helped Elon a lot.”
Trump went on to suggest that Musk’s recent criticisms may be driven by personal interests, especially concerning electric vehicle policies. “He only developed a problem when he found out I would cut the EV mandate,” the president added.
