Several people were feared dead on Sunday night after suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly attack on the Tyoshin community in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State.

Local residents said the attackers arrived at night, taking advantage of the darkness to invade the community and cause chaos. The gunmen reportedly opened fire on unsuspecting villagers, leading to panic and loss of lives.

Though the exact number of people killed is still unknown, eyewitnesses described the attack as both brutal and heartbreaking. One of the victims has been identified as Monday Dooden, a member of the Tyoshin community.

His brother, Akawe Francis, shared his sorrow in an emotional post on social media. “Monday Dooden, my brother, we left our village over ten years ago because of Fulani attacks and moved to Naka, thinking we would be safe. But we were wrong. You were killed last night by the same Fulani,” he wrote.

Earlier that same day, another deadly attack was reported in Edikwu Ankpali, a community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State. Just like in Naka, several people were said to have lost their lives in the hands of suspected herdsmen.

The two incidents have left many residents in shock and fear, with some community members now calling on the government to step up efforts to protect rural communities from such repeated attacks.

As the affected families mourn their loved ones, residents of both Naka and Apa are pleading for peace and security. Many say they no longer feel safe in their homes, fearing that more attacks could occur at any time.
