Over the weekend, a violent attack on the village of Yelewata in Benue State resulted in the deaths of several people, most of whom were reportedly asleep when the attack happened. Many others were injured or forced to flee their homes.

In response, Guterres called for justice and urged that those behind the brutal killings be brought to book. According to UN Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, the organization is closely watching the situation.

“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended,” he said.
