French media company Canal+ has officially taken full control of MultiChoice Group, the parent company behind popular TV services DStv and GOtv.

MultiChoice

South Africa’s Competition Tribunal approved the $3 billion deal on July 23, 2025.

MultiChoice is Africa’s largest pay-TV provider, serving more than 14.5 million subscribers in 50 sub-Saharan African countries.

With this acquisition, Canal+ now has full ownership of the company, marking a major shift in the continent’s media landscape.

However, the deal comes with a few important conditions. To protect South Africa’s media independence and local content, Canal+ is required to:

  • Keep MultiChoice’s head office in South Africa
  • Continue to support local filmmakers and content creators
  • Invest in African stories, sports, and digital growth

As part of this commitment, Canal+ has promised to invest about 26 billion rand over the next three years. This money will go into local content production, sports broadcasting, and improving digital platforms.

By keeping operations in South Africa, Canal+ aims to strengthen its support for African creatives and ensure that local talent continues to thrive.

This takeover gives Canal+ a bigger role in the African entertainment industry and helps them reach even more viewers across the continent.

What This Means for Viewers:

  • More local content on DStv and GOtv
  • Improved digital services
  • Continued sports coverage
  • Job opportunities and growth for African media professionals

The move signals a new era for Africa’s largest pay-TV provider, with hopes of better services and more African stories being shared both locally and globally.
