Controversy trails decision to rename University of Maiduguri after Buhari

A growing number of Nigerians are speaking out against the federal government’s recent decision to rename the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University.

Students, alumni, and concerned citizens have taken to social media and news platforms to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop the renaming process.

In a widely shared open letter, the group said they respect the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria but believe changing the name of UNIMAID would erase the rich history and identity the school has built for over 40 years.

The petition, led by Opeyemi Olatinwo, described the University of Maiduguri as a symbol of strength, knowledge, and pride for the northeastern region of Nigeria.

They pointed out how the university remained open even during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, offering education in the face of danger.

“UNIMAID is not just a name. It’s a symbol of hope for the Northeast,” the letter read. Petitioners added that changing the name would take away from its emotional and historical importance.

So far, the petition has been signed by thousands, including current students and well-known graduates. Many believe the proposed new name doesn’t represent the views of the people who care deeply about the university.

While acknowledging Buhari’s legacy, the petitioners suggested other ways to honor him.

They proposed renaming the Federal University of Transportation in Daura, Buhari’s hometown, or the Nigerian Army University in Biu, which better connects with his military background.

“This is not about politics,” the letter stated. “It’s about keeping a name that has stood the test of time and inspired generations.”

As of today (Friday), the appeal continues to gain support online, with over 1,500 new signatures.

Many supporters stressed the need for proper consultation before making decisions that affect national institutions and culture.

They expressed hope that President Tinubu would reconsider the move and choose a way to honor Buhari without removing the identity of the University of Maiduguri.
