The Nigerian Senate has issued a firm warning to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, telling her not to return to the National Assembly until her suspension officially ends.

Speaking on behalf of the Senate, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, who chairs the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, said there is no valid court order that requires the Senate to recall her at this time.

This response came after reports emerged that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan plans to resume her legislative duties on Tuesday.

She is reportedly relying on a recent ruling from the Federal High Court in Abuja, delivered by Justice Binta Nyako.

However, Adaramodu clarified that the judgment does not direct the Senate to lift her suspension. Instead, it only suggests that the Senate review its rules and consider whether the suspension period is too long.

He further stressed that the Senate acted within its constitutional powers when it suspended her for misconduct during a plenary session.

In addition, the Senate stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has been found guilty of contempt of court.

She was fined ₦5 million and instructed to issue a public apology through two national newspapers and her verified Facebook page orders she has reportedly not fulfilled.

“It is both surprising and legally wrong that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan wants to return to the Senate based on a court order that doesn’t exist,” Adaramodu said.

He added that her presence at the National Assembly before the end of her suspension could cause disorder and break established rules.

The Senate confirmed that it will consider the court’s advice on possibly changing its rules and reviewing her suspension in due time.

Until then, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has been asked to stay away from the Senate chambers and allow the legal process to unfold properly.
