The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reacted to the trending case of Corper Raye, whose certificate was reportedly withheld despite completing her one-year service.

In a statement released on Sunday, NYSC dismissed claims that the decision was linked to her criticism of the government. Instead, the scheme said the action was due to disciplinary issues.

According to the official statement, Raye, whose full name is Ushie Rita Uguamaye (State Code: LA/24B/8325), is one of 131 corps members whose Certificates of National Service (CNS) were held back for valid reasons.

NYSC explained that her service year was extended by two months because she failed to attend the April 2025 biometrics clearance a violation of the NYSC Bye-Laws.

The management stressed that extending service in such cases is standard practice and not targeted at her personally.

“This procedure applies to all corps members who miss mandatory clearances. It is not politically motivated,” the statement read.

Raye, who served in Lagos State, became popular after a viral video where she spoke about the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

On Saturday, she took to Instagram claiming she was unfairly denied her certificate during the collection exercise, accusing her Local Government Inspector of refusing to clear her despite her attendance in April.

The situation has drawn national attention. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned NYSC’s action, calling it “unacceptable” and demanding immediate justice for her.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore also criticised the scheme, describing the decision as a “gross injustice” and vowing to support her fight for justice.

While Raye insists she complied with all clearance requirements, NYSC maintains that its decision is purely procedural and in line with its regulations.
